Short & sad note about South Korea

One of my students who graduated in December 2008, she is about 18 years old now. (in Korea 19 because you are 1 year old on the day they born)

This student told me "oh us classmates went back to school to meet because we have not seen each other for about 2 months. You know, my classmates changed a lot, teacher." I made nothing of it and so I asked back, "changes? what kind of changes...it’s been only 1 or 2 months …?”

Teacher, plastic surgery, the answer came. I am like WHAT…???
Oh they had plastic surgeries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WAS SHOCKED, at the age of 18, seriously they are almost kids?!

Well right now in Korea the number one deal , the hottest stuff is plastic surgery!

Parents giving plastic surgeries to their kids as graduation gifts!!! Why because the parents‘ generation is already "crazy", I mean they also support the idea, “yes my son/daughter it will be great to change this or that on you.”

As nowadays I am an expert on the topic (I interviewed all of my classes), I learned that they mostly do facial changes, 4 of them:

1. cut the eyes open

a, with Asian eye look but opened

b, having double eyelids (that is what we westerners have)

2. jaw cut (which means to have a V shaped jaw)

3. nose changes (it must be pointy and slim)

4. flattening their cheeks, so it is not rounded and “hilly”

Amazing, unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 16-18 years old kids!!!!

Our marketing assistant who is Korean told me that in Seoul downtown you are hardly able to find a normal doctor because all the commercial spaces are taken away by plastic surgery clinics. Ridiculous! You can imagine, after all these, I am a star among my students because I have V shaped jaw by nature, double eyelids and pointy nose, oh and the Angelina Jolie lips are not hurting either!

Koreans admit that competition between individuals is tough - if you have 2 candidates for a job, you will choose the prettier one. Generally speaking LOOK is extremely important for Asians, and they are not afraid of changing, manipulating it.

It is sooooo sad, this is the world we live in!

Born into Brothels

Nem volt még példa, itt a blogunkon, hogy egy filmről említést tegyünk, de ma (jan 12.), egy egészen fantasztikus és megindító dokumentumfilmre volt szerencsém rátalálni.

A címe Born into Brothels, ami annyit tesz, Kuplerájba születni, a dokumentumfilm valós szereplőkkel 2005-ben készült.

Zana, egy egészen kivételes fiatal fotográfus nő New Yorkból, ezelőtt 8 évvel ellátogatott Kalkuttába, ahol felvételeket készített a különböző női sorsokról, és munkája közben eljutott a kalkuttai vöröslámpás negyedbe is. Mind a mai napig a női élet igen olcsó Indiában, még normál körülmények között is, hát még ha, az adott nő alantos munkára kényszerül. Nem csak ezek a nők számkivetettek, de még a gyerekeik is, a negyed pedig zsúfolásig tele van velük.

El nem tudom képzelni, hogyan volt ez lehetséges, de Zana velük lakott 2 évig, dolgozott a témán és egyre közelebb került a körülötte élő gyerekekhez. Ekkor jött a felismerés, miért én készítem a felvételeket, ha a gyerekek is tudnák, így kiválasztott 8 gyereket, akikkel elindult egy hihetetlen folyamat…

A 10 év körüli gyerekeket körülbelül 3 évig oktatta fotózásra, az elmondása szerint csak segített nekik magabiztossá válni. A képek némelyike fantasztikus, de a vöröslámpás negyedből nincs kiút.

Zana ezért visszament Amerikába, ahol kiállítást szervezett, elkészítette ezt a filmet (és vele dokumentumfilm témában 2005-ben Oscart is nyert), könyvet készített, a képeket világkörüli útra vitte és némely felvételt az Amnesty International világkalendáriumához adta... és a mindebből befolyó összeg a gyerekek taníttatását finanszírozza, egyetemig. Mind a film, mind a hozzátartozó extrák lenyűgözőek, szívből ajánlom mindenkinek. (Linkek lent.)

There has not been a time when we recommended a movie on our blog before, but today, I was lucky to randomly find a fantastic movie.

The title is Born into Brothels, made with the real characters, the movie was released in 2005.

Zana, an absolutely exceptional young photographer woman, went to Calcutta 8 years ago, to shoot women’s issues. While there she ended up visiting the brothels of Calcutta. Till today, women’s lives are still cheap in India, especially when they are forced to work in a highly abusive environment. Not just the women themselves are mistreated but their kids.

I have no idea how it was possible but Zana moved into the brothels for 2 years, to live with them, to understand their way of living. Meanwhile she met the children populating the brothels, and got closer to them, when she realized, God why I am the one taking pictures when they could do it.

So she picked 8 of them and taught them photography for about 3 years, as she says “giving them support to have an opinion and stand up for it”. Some of the photos are outstanding! The only problem is that there is no way out from where they came from, so to help, Zana went back to NY.

She organized a photo exhibition, finished this documentary film (btw it won Oscar in 2005), gave some of the pictures to the world calendar of Amnesty International and made a world tour with the collection itself. The money gathered/s together from all these efforts goes to the education of these kids till they finish university. Both, the movie and the extra features are amazing, I recommend it with all my heart.

The cute story of the week / Egy aranyos tortentet a heten

Hogyan is kezdődik egy jó recept… ?

How does a good recipe start…?

Hm… hat az biztosan nem árt kezdésnek, ha nem neked kell vele bajlódni, hanem valaki más elkészíti, de e héten ennél is jobb meglepetésben volt részem. Csütörtökön Mike-nak mázlija volt, és nem kellett egész délelőtt tanítania. Miután a heten a szokott 25 óra helyett nekem volt vagy 37 hét, mondtam Mike-nak, hogy most te vagy a soros a főzésben, mert alig élek.

It definitely doesn't hurt when you are not the one who needs to do all the preparation, because somebody else will do it for you. On Thursday Mike was lucky because he had no class, so I told him: Mike it is your turn now to prepare the lunch as this week I have 37 hours while my average is 25.

Hozzá kell tenni, hogy a múlt hétvégén, miközben anyuékkal beszéltem vasárnap, Mike intézte a bevásárlást, nagyon jó munkát is végzett. Hazafelé mondta, hogy vett valami meglepetést is… mi is lehet, találgattam, de bizony a bárány hús, hát az nem jutott eszembe.

The story starts last weekend - while I was chatting with my parents Mike did the shopping and I have to admit he made a great job with it. On the way home he told me that he bought a surprise for us… hm I was trying to guess what it could be but the meat type - lamb - somehow did not come up on my list of first 20 guesses. : )

Bizony, vett egy darab bárányt, mondván ilyet én még nem készítettem neki, de bízik bennem…!!!
Surely he got a nice piece of lamb with the intention of challenging me in the kitchen…!!!

A bárány a héten terítékre került, ízletes volt és meg kell hagyni, Jamie Oliver ügyes fiú! : ) Miután a karácsonyi csoda szakácskönyvemet használtam, a sosem látott húsdarab elkészítéséhez. (Rendben láttam már bárányt, csak az én családom sosem eszik ilyen húst)

The lamb was served this week - it was delicious and I have to bless the name Jamie Oliver. I used my X-mas present Big Cook Book, written by Jamie, for being able to deal with this never-seen-before piece of meat. (OK, I have seen such a thing, but my family NEVER eats it)

Szóval ez az előtörténet, na most Mike mondta, hogy Ő úgy enne Yaki Soba-t, ami egy japán étel és már el tudom készíteni. (bár be kell vallani, én nem is szeretem) Ehhez azonban sertés kell.

Mike told me previously that he would like to eat Yaki Soba which is a Japanese meal I can already prepare. (To be frank I don’t even like it) You need to use pork for this dish.

Én az iskolában, Mike a konyhánkban ügyeskedett, együtt ebédeltünk tehát csütörtökön, és nagy mosolyogva, lelkesen magyaráz, hogy is mint készült az étel, ami egyébként abszolúte nem Yaki Soba volt, hanem sok zöldséges egytálétel.

Thursday morning while I was teaching at school, he was being a wizard in the kitchen. He brought the lunch around 12:30 and we ate together. He was smiling and enthusiastic about the cooking he has just done and he was explaining to me how the different ingredients were used ect. BTW it was not Yaki Soba but rather a veggie meal.

Villájára tűzve ad nekem egy nagy falat húst és miközben jóízűen falatozok, megkérdezi: Imola, milyen húst eszel?

He offered me a piece of meat on his fork and while giving it to me asked "Imola what type of meat are you eating now?"

Hmm… azt hittem a megmaradt Yaki Soba sertést… bár most, hogy mondod…? (olyan ritkán eszünk sertést, hogy alig ismerem fel)

Well… I thought I am eating the leftover of the Yaki Soba pork, but as you are asking…? (We eat pork so rarely that I am hardly able to recognize it : ) )

A meglepettségemtől alig láttam, de miután nekem nagyon ízlett, lelkesen megettem az utolsó falatig! : )

I was so surprised I could hardly say anything but since it was so delicious I was more than happy to finish my plate! : )

Where are we going...?

It is is fantastic we will get away for a loooong weekend, check this out, it is promising ...

The island is Borneo, 2 hours flight from Singapore. The place is Kota Kinabalu, this north corner of the island belongs to Malaysia. The next door neighbor is Brunei, the rich oil empire! :) We will go in the end of this month as Mike got a day off. :) I have been hoping for a short trip to see the islands around us as now it is happening, we are sooo happy about it!

Tegnap délután, mentünk mi a tengerpartra! Sok érdekes cüccot látunk (példaul, a papir sárkányokat), de a legfontosabb az volt, hogy egy új, kellemes varosrészt találtunk. Biztosan visszamegyunk többször is. Egy kis angol szoveg, és jön a képek.....

Greetings all,

Here are some pictures from our beach outing on Sunday. This was a very enjoyable day with lots of walking, a suitably clean beach, and plenty to see. The highlight for me was the amazing kite community enjoying a stiff breeze. We will definitely be returning soon, to rent a tandem bike and have a picnic as everybody else was doing.
